The 6th session of the Taste of Life Course was all about Wales and the Welsh Culture and the strong links that Wales has to Liverpool, its people, its history, it’s language and it was really interesting as lots of people have Welsh connections here in Liverpool.  It is in the names of the streets, it’s people and everyone thoroughly enjoyed learning about Wales.

Matthew told us all about St Dwynewn who is the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers – the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine.  St Dwynwen’s Day is celebrated in Wales on 25th January.  Matthew told us that Dwynwen lived during the 5th century and was the most beautiful of Brychan Brycheiniog’s 24 daughters. Dwynwen fell in love with a prince called Maelon Dafodrill, but unfortunately her father had already arranged that she should marry someone else.  Dwynwen was so upset that she could not marry Maelon that she begged God to make her forget him. After falling asleep, Dwynwen was visited by an angel, who appeared carrying a sweet potion designed to erase all memory of Maelon and turn him into a block of ice.  God then gave three wishes to Dwynwen. Her first wish was that Maelon be thawed; her second that God meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers; and third, that she should never marry. All three were fulfilled, and as a mark of her thanks, Dwynwen devoted herself to God’s service for the rest of her life.

After the lovely story of St Dwynewn we attempted some singing (!) and the lunch we prepared together today was vegetarian Glamorgan sausages made by Diane with mash and broccoli.  Tom made lava bread, Alan had made Welsh cakes and Steven had made the homemade chilli jam to complement the Glamorgan Sausages as well as some tasty Welsh Rarebit!

Everyone is really enjoying being involved with Liverpool Community Spirit and learning new things every week!

Diane CEO of Natural Breaks said “I live in Wales so I am very pleased that people are learning to cook my most favourite Welsh cakes and I hope we get these to the office soon!  It is such an accessible and friendly course that everyone is getting so much from.”
