First Aid Training with British Red Cross Alongside our ‘Have Your Say Group’, Natural Breaks co-produced a training programme, throughout May, for people we support that focused on what skills they would like to learn and their interests. On Tuesday 13th May, Natural Breaks ran a first aid session led by Communication Education Coordinator, Carmel, from British Red Cross. We were joined by people we support and members from Options for Supported Living. The workshop was free of charge, thanks to British Red Cross’ mission to make first aid training accessible for everyone. The course helped individuals learn basic first aid skills, including how to treat burns and bumps, and who to call in an emergency. Jackie, who attended the session and is supported by Natural Breaks, said she thought you called 111 in an emergency but now knows it is 999. On the day, Carmel used practical demonstrations and role play scenarios to engage with individuals and teach real-life skills. This style of learning was fun, engaging and worked really well. At our latest ‘Have Your Say’ meeting, Jackie recounted how to treat a burn with cold water and Paul demonstrated how to treat a cut! British Red Cross are leading industry experts that create educational opportunities to save lives. Their work is rooted in seven core principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. With their support, we were able to provide informative and practical training within a safe, accessible and fun environment. Before the session with Carmel, people we support had never took a first aid course and were unsure about how they could help themselves, or others, if there was an emergency. Kevin, who has been supported by Natural Breaks since 2009, said: “I have learned how to mend a bump on your head. I feel more confident about first aid now. The best part about the training has been meeting lots of new people”.
