Elsa's Experience at Natural Breaks No two days are ever the same at Natural Breaks and that’s something Elsa discovered very quickly! Just a couple of months into the role and she’s experienced busy mornings, craft sessions and the kind of moments that remind you why this work is so important. We asked Elsa to reflect on her journey with us and what she’s learned so far. A Warm Welcome from Natural Breaks Looking back on the first few weeks, Elsa shared how starting a new job can be daunting but Natural Breaks only made her feel welcome and supported when she joined. “A couple of my colleagues, that I met when I first started, told me that there is not one person in the company that isn’t friendly. They have proven me right so far”. Building Meaningful Connections Being a support worker wasn’t always a role that Elsa thought she’d have, but she always knew that the line of work she ended up in would make a difference and be more personable. Speaking about her job, Elsa said “I feel more fulfilled and I have a perfect work/life balance. The best part has been forming real, meaningful relationships with the people we support. It feels like more than just a job. Sometimes it can even feel like spending time with a friend, and it’s the best feeling in the world when I help a person we support accomplish their goals”. The impact our support workers make is unmeasurable. They foster independence, change lives and are the reason we can provide truly person-centred care. The difference they make to people we support and families is evident, every day. One moment like this, that struck Elsa, was being invited to a rehearsal show by a person she supports. “They had been rehearsing for 6 months and when I first started supporting them, I had helped to make props for the show during my shifts. They invited me to go and watch the rehearsal. I went in in my spare time, and it was amazing. I love the unexpected opportunities that can come from simply connecting with people”. Learning Through Experience As with all things, there can be challenges and support work is no different. There are positive moments and there can be points that are difficult. Reflecting on this, Elsa shared that during these times, you need patience and understanding. “It’s important to remind myself that the person I am supporting is trying to communicate with me and express their needs. Remaining sensitive and considerate usually leads to a stronger relationship with one another, that increases trust and means we can continue working to achieve their goals. Natural Breaks provides us with plenty of training and courses too, such as fire safety, health & safety and first aid. This helps make you feel more confident in your role so you know you’re providing the best support you can”. Making an Impact Elsa’s story shows how vital support work is and how having a career in the sector can be incredible. At Natural Breaks, we love watching our support teams grow and we wouldn’t be here without them. Don’t just take our word for it though – here is Elsa’s last piece of advice to anyone considering a job in support. “If you’re looking for something more than just a job, I would highly recommend it. I’m loving my time here and I’m really glad I applied for something new. I’ve never worked in support previously so don’t let that put you off”! Manage Cookie Preferences
