Cathy's Journey When Cathy was diagnosed with cancer, she faced a frightening and uncertain time. As Cathy does not use words to communicate and is unable to make complex decisions about her health, Cathy relied on her incredible support team — and they rose to the challenge. Support through every step From day one, her support team worked closely with doctors and nurses, ensuring every decision was in Cathy’s best interests. They knew her so well that even the smallest facial expression, gesture, or sound told them what she needed. This deep understanding meant Cathy’s voice was always heard, even without words. During a six-week hospital stay, staff were by her side 24/7 — advocating, reassuring, and helping hospital staff understand her unique needs. When Cathy required a stoma bag after surgery, the team trained in specialist care, providing sensitive, skilled support at home while always protecting her dignity. Even during moments of anxiety or discomfort, their calm, consistent approach helped Cathy feel safe and supported. They celebrated her milestones, encouraged independence, and helped her re-engage with the activities she loves. Living well Today, Cathy is thriving. Her health is stable, her stoma is well managed, and she lives happily and confidently at home — surrounded by a team who champion her every day. Speaking about her support, Cathy’s family shared: “As a family we have peace of mind, feel happy and secure knowing Cath is well cared for and in good hands. Due to Cath being in Supported Living, mum has some time for herself – swimming, bowling and going the gym, which helped her socially. Our stepfather, who was devoted to Cath and sadly passed away in 2024, was able to do his gardening, which he absolutely loved. We are happy in the fact that Cath will always be cared for, respected in every way as she deserves to be and remains to be as happy as she is now. Natural Breaks are the reason that our family sleep well at night knowing Cath is secure”. Person-centred support Cathy’s story is an inspiring example of what truly person-centred care looks like: dedication, compassion, and advocacy that makes a real difference.
