Since the start of 2024, Nicola has been volunteering at Aldham Library, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

When Nicola first began volunteering at Aldham Library, her duties included:

  • Removing seven - day loan stickers
  • Replacing any reference labels
  • Returning the books
  • Helping staff by moving book trolleys across different library floors

These early tasks helped build Nicola’s confidence and work skills in a supportive, structured environment.

As Nicola’s experience grew, so did her responsibilities. Now, Nicola assists in more varied areas, such as:

  • Managing international book withdrawals
  • Stamping books
  • Packing and preparing books for dispatch

Nicola’s path to volunteering at LJMU came about through the university connections of her support worker. For years, Nicola’s family sought a volunteer role or activity that would be a good fit for her needs—something that not only utilised her support but enabled Nicola to feel productive and gave her a sense of belonging. Through these connections, Nicola was able to find the perfect opportunity.

“Nicola has been loving her role at the Liverpool John Moore library. She particularly likes making the boxes with tape and I’m hoping that more diverse jobs will come Nic’s way, as she continues working at Aldham Library”.

In March 2025, Nicola celebrated her year anniversary at Aldham Library. Our Marketing and Communications Officer visited Nicola at her workplace with a card and chocolates, to mark her incredible achievement.
