Jackie's Journey of Independence Jackie has been on a journey to become independent. Over the last few months, she has worked hard to build up her confidence and develop new skills to help achieve her goal. Being able to do things, without staff, is important to Jackie. It makes her feel happy, assured and positive about the future. At home, Jackie has been cleaning her bedroom and doing her washing independently – with plans to begin cooking her dinners and doing a weekly food shop. Outside of her home, Jackie achieved something special recently – she went on her first holiday without staff support, to The Lakes! An unforgettable first holiday In the weeks before her trip, staff worked closely with Jackie to help her prepare. They supported her to pack a suitcase and make sure she had everything she needed – creating a checklist together, so Jackie could feel organised and stress free. Her team also worked with Jackie’s friend, who she was going away with, to create a holiday pack and complete a risk assessment. This helped everyone, including Jackie, think about the best way to keep her safe during the trip. Before Jackie set off, her support staff also went over her medication, making sure she understood when to take it and her friend could help her if needed. Making memories On the day of her holiday, Jackie was ecstatic. She had a few nerves but felt ready to take on this new challenge. She had a fantastic time at The Lakes. She visited The Beatrix Potter Museum, spent quality time with her friend and proved to herself that she could do it! Supporting independence This was more than just a trip – it was a massive step in Jackie’s journey to independence. We, alongside Jackie, are incredibly proud of her courage, determination and confidence. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Jackie. Manage Cookie Preferences
